Located near the Jekyll Island Club on land now occupied by housing and the island’s airport, the course is no more than a memory. It marked the beginning, however, of what has become a treasured pastime for island visitors.

In the 1920’s, members of the Jekyll Island Club hired legendary golf course architect Walter J. Travis to build a new and improved 18-hole course. Travis incorporated some holes from the original course, designed in 1898, into his Great Dunes layout which paralleled the Atlantic Ocean on the island’s eastern shore.

The course’s traditional Scottish design features several elevated tees, large greenside bunkers and small, sloping greens. Prevailing winds from the Atlantic Ocean create an additional challenge and force golfers to choose their clubs carefully. Great Dunes is truly a unique golf course and a “must play” for Jekyll Island visitors. The State of Georgia purchased Jekyll Island in 1947 and shortly thereafter the back nine of the Great Dunes course succumbed to the development of the Fortson Parkway and the Jekyll Island Convention Center. The front nine of Travis’ course remains intact as the present-day Great Dunes Course, an authentic links course built over the natural lay of the land.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v14.nonxt2.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D0cd21f5c2d8bd24a%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331448269%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D658E8F151314ABAB8C2C40FCE3B97AF739D105C3.19CADE6E7D7686504CE92135EC82913C60CC1E2E%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Dcd21f5c2d8bd24a%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3Dsjakc0uVGuGzeycTQJbEN80cG4A&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

This tournament truly lets you "experience" history! Register Online Now!

Post from http://behindthecrank.blogspot.com . . .

Georgia's Jewel

As very good fortune, indeed, would have it, the first cool spell in many months arrived on the same morning that we found ourselves camped out on the Georgia coast in Crooked River State Park. A short drive later and we were ready to launch on one seriously beautiful trails ride around Georgia's Jekyll Island. The causeway approach to the island, carpeted on both sides with fabulous wildflower stands that seemed endless, let you know that you were nearing something very special and the view from atop the last bridge onto the island revealed the magical crowns of very old timber.

The fact that it is an island, inherently eliminates through traffic, but there seemed to be additional factors at play that affected the general feel of what little traffic there was. The entire island moves at a slower pace and vehicle operators of all types exhibit more courtesy toward one another. Riding on trails designed and designated for cycling is nice enough, but add to that formula laws that impose serious, finite limitations on development and the result is purely delightful. This place is quite the jewel!

Even though we had set aside only a few hours for the experience, it was amazing to see how many completely different riding surfaces and settings could be enjoyed in the 20 mile trip around the island. Everything from smooth asphalt to concrete to crushed stone to coquina to dirt, not to mention wooden bridges and gnarley roots could be ridden upon while viewing sea oats, sand dunes, the Atlantic, windblown scrub oaks, palmetto, salt marshes, residential areas, historic structures beneath magnificent live oaks. Birds were everywhere and the Monarch butterfly was approaching pest status. Restaurants, restrooms, shops, hotels, and camping were all easy to find.

Simply put, this one calls for another visit on the schedule, soon!

Stay Tuned to this blog for a virtual bike ride from the Harris family! We videotaped our ride this weekend hoping we can help those who haven't experienced those wonderful bike rides on Jekyll Island! Pine Lakes, at one time, was the red headed step child of the three. I always felt that the Dick Wilson designed Oleander was a timeless classic, worthy of two to three rounds each time I visit.

However, this vacation, I split my golfing time between the two courses. In 2002 the State of Georgia freed up some money and golf course architect Clyde Johnston reworked this ultra-tight, tree lined course. I used to dread playing Pine Lakes, so much so that I usually skipped playing it all together. It has taken me 5 years just to play the newly redesigned course. Not anymore. Johnston reworked Pine Lakes in 2002, making it much more friendly to errant shots. Sure, you’ll still need a decent degree of accuracy, there is no links golf here. The first thing that I noticed were LESS trees, and more bunkers. The greens were also much more contoured, yet still fair. I am not sure if I am a fan of bermuda greens though. The course still winds its way lazily through an island forest and no, you will not see any homes, just a few gators and lots of deer. The course is also kid friendly (special US Kids tee boxes for all) and quite an easy walk as well. Read More >

If you don't believe me...read what other wrote!

This is what the travelers on Yahoo think about Jekyll Island... Maybe you should post your own!

Live, Love and Enjoy!!
Last Visit: July 2004
Great for: Beaches, Hiking/Camping, History/Culture, Budget Travel, Family Vacations

Jekyll Island, Georgia is the island for me. This is a great vacation place. The beaches are not crowded. The scenic view is fantastic and your family can enjoy their family time together without worry.

You can enjoy looking for shells in the morning, fishing at the pier and then touring the homes of the rich and famous. At night, the island is so beautiful and you can ride in your car and see deer standing beside the road. The deer are so tamed that you can pull up beside them and they will just look right at you. At night, the marina is an enjoyable place to go watch the ships come in and the oysters at the bar are great.
The kids loved the Water Park and, if you spend the day there, by night all you want to do is lay on the beach and watch the waves because you are so tired. We always enjoy staying at the Jekyll Island Inn because it has the best pool and a bar close by the pool so we can watch the children.

But the best of all is going to Soccer Complex and taking the boardwalk to the beach. It is so nice on that side of the island. Not a lot of crowd and my husband and son can fish while my daughter and I enjoy the sum. We can go shrimping on the side and watch the shrimp boats come by. Also, we love to see the dolphins.
Jekyll Island is the place to relax especially when you only get one vacation a year and it is a place where you can live, love and enjoy the relaxing side of life.

"What A Wonderful World"
Last Visit: March 2005
Great for: Beaches, History/Culture, Nightlife, Budget Travel, Family Vacations

In January of this year (05) my sister and I decided to take a mini vacation. We had no where special to go, so we just pointed the car south. After a few stops and a few disappoints, we landed at Jekyll Island.
Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagine the beautiful experience we were about to have staying at Jekyll Island. The spacious beach, the promising sunrise, the peaceful sunset are all a soul needs to see what a wonderful world Jekyll Island is! One last note, 6 weeks later...the car was returning to my Jekyll Island sanctuary!

A Geeat Place for a Honeymoon!
Last Visit: September 2005
Great for: Beaches, Hiking/Camping, History/Culture, Budget Travel, Family Vacations

My husband and I went there for our honeymoon because my sister had recommended it to us. She had told us all this great stuff about it and she was defitinately right. The beach was amazing and we pratically had the whole beach to ourselves. We went the week of Labor Day and it was so uncrowded. We rented a 2 bedroom duplex through Parker-Kaufman that ended up being cheaper than a hotel room. We will defitinately be visiting again-only this time our three children will get to experience the beauty of Jekyll Island!

Jekyll Island Family Vacation
Last Visit: July 2005
Great for: Beaches, Scuba/Snorkeling, Hiking/Camping, History/Culture, Budget Travel, Family Vacations

This was the first year that we as a family went on a family vacation. My husband and I were celebrating our 4 year anniversary, and the kids being teenagers (18 & 16) all loaded up in the truck and headed to Jekyll Island. The whole experience was something wonderful.

The people were so nice! And the weather was sunny and hot, just the way we wanted it! We stayed in a duplex on the beach, and was up before the sun every morning looking for shells, then watching the sunrise. That was so spectactular! Renting bikes for the day and riding around the island looking at the sites, and the beaches that surround Jekyll Island was a wonderful treat. Then in the middle, when its hottest, we would go in and nap where it was cool for a couple hours. Then we were back at the beach. At night fall we would watch the moon rise, absolutely breath taking. The kids and I had never been to the ocean before, we had the best time ever. I happy my husband wanted to share his childhood memories with us while we were there, this is where he spent many summers with his family.Go and enjoy, make some special memories of your own.

One of my favorite vacation destinations
Last Visit: September 2005
Great for: Beaches, Hiking/Camping, History/Culture, Budget Travel, Family Vacations

I have been vacationing in Jekyll Island for many years. It's a nice, quiet, and relaxing small island.
If you are looking for a touristy beach with lots of shops, resturaunts, and large resorts then this place is not for you. But, if you're looking for a beach that's never crowded, smaller hotels, and smaller local resturaunts then this is the place for you!

The scenery is beautiful. You can find your own corner of the beach during the off season and never see another person all day. They have horseback riding, bicycle rentals, dolphin and fishing cruises, nature walks, a great historic district, and much more. I've stayed at a few of the different hotels as well as the campground, and was very happy with the places I stayed. They also have house and condo rentals as well. There are also several other islands to visit near by, including St. Simons and Cumberland islands.
Jekyll island is located about 1 1/2 hours south of Savannah, and about 45 min north of Jacksonville.

Beautiful
Last Visit: June 2005
Great for: Beaches, Family Vacations
This is the place to go if you dislike crowds and glitter. It is simple, down to earth and peaceful. You can enjoy your entire visit because it is so laid back. If you are really looking for R&R then this is the place. The surroundings are beautiful. Clean, safe, uncrowded.

IDEAL day trip if you live in GA, FL, SC
Last Visit:
May 2004
This is maybe the best kept secret in Georgia. I found this place while on a business trip, browsing travel brochures in a hotel in Georgia. I went there because I'd never heard of it. It's a bit of a pain to get there by car, and as you cross the bridge it looks like the standard golf course/dog and pony show that draws suburbanites in the summer. The real treasure here is the historical grounds, where you see the country estates of the Vanderbuilts, Rockafellers, etc. Jekyll Island in the early 20th century was used as a hunting resort for the extremely privilaged, and much of the history has been restored over the years. It's a great getaway for an afternoon or weekend.

WONDERFUL VACATION
Last Visit: July 2007
Great for: Beaches, Hiking/Camping, History/Culture, Budget Travel, Family Vacations

MY FAMILY AND I ENJOYED OUR RECENT TRIP TO JEKYLL ISLAND.WE HAD A WONDERFUL TIME,WE WILL DEFINATELY VISIT THERE AGAIN.IT IS A GREAT PLACE TO VACATION WITH THE FAMILY.JEKYLL ISLAND IS VERY PEACEFUL,A MUCH BETTER PLACE THAN FLORIDA.WHAT I LIKED THE MOST;IT IS FAMILY SAFE&FRIENDLY.NO BAR OR NIGHT CLUB ON EVERY CORNER.IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A NICE VACATION THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO.BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE DOLPHIN TOURS.

Beautiful
Last Visit: May 2005
Great for: Beaches, History/Culture, Family Vacations
My husband and I visted Jekyll Island in May of 05 for our Annivary. Great place. Enjoy the carraige rides and walks on the beach.Very peaceful. Will return again this year!!!!

Make Some Memories This Weekend at Summer Waves

August 4th at Summer Waves Water Park:

Watch your turtles GO! in support of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island! We took the trolley tour and the scenery and history was just amazing. On our way back to Florida, we stopped by Jekyll Island to take a look at the beach. I was forever hooked.
My mother lived in Ohio but since I lived in Florida, when I wanted a peaceful, beautiful place to go, I headed up to Jekyll Island at least once a year.

In fact, everyone I worked with, I would tell them they have to go there, it is wonderful and peaceful.

My mother and her cousin passed away last year and I miss them, but I continue to come to Jekyll Island for peace and while I am there I think about my mom and know that she is with me.. I am bringing my grandchildren up there in July and we will be camping out and going to the GSTC.

My dream would be to be able to move to Jekyll Island or even the Brunswick area in about 5 years. I keep hoping to win that lottery……….LOL

Here are a few of my favorite pictures to post of Jekyll Island.

Thanks and have a wonderful day.

Sharon,

Kissimmee, Florida.

Ms Mabry's 7th Grade Class' Podcasts

Click here to learn a bit about Jekyll Island from some very smart 7th graders.

http://mabryonline.org/mglc/science/7th/jekyll07/

Ken From Macon's Memories

Ken from Macon writes:

I am a 40 year-old who went to Jekyll almost annually with my parents. I happened across your blog when I was researching what was going on with Jekyll.I haven't had time yet to digest everything but if you'll swing by Flickr.com and see the pictures I took of the old Stuckey's Carriage Inn you might enjoy them. Look up "Georgia Coast Inn".

Most of the times we had were good though my Mom badly dislocated her ankle when falling at the old Hilton (Villas by the Sea). I remember the ambulance was ten years old and to be replaced that autumn. But the EMT's more than made up for it.I also know Rob Evans, who is a customer of mine. He was a Carnegie nominee for saving one or two people (I forget)caught on a sandbar at Jekyll. Our coast is one of the nesting grounds for sea turtles. Sometimes the turtles get injured by boat props and this center nurses them back to health so that they can be released again. This place is great! I'm not going to try to convince you that this is comparable to the Smithsonian, but for a small town in South Georgia, they've done a really good job. They have a small interactive learning center that does a good job presenting information about turtles and their environment. Behind the learning center is the turtle hospital which is a barn with a lot of large tanks. Monkey Boy both really enjoyed this outing. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour do this museum, depending on your level of ADD.

Nancy's Jekyll Island Memories

Dear editors,
My love affair with Jekyll Island began in the hazy summer of 1960, when my brave mother drove four energetic children from Buffalo, New York to visit our grandparents who had recently retired to this exotic paradise. We had never even seen the ocean and were eager to experience every inch of the island. We were greeted by wild turkey and enchanted by the oaks draped with hanging moss. My grandmother drove us around in an old station wagon, past chain gangs clearing palmetto with huge scythes. We tiptoed through the dunes at night with flashlights, watching sea turtles hatch and scurry to the sea. We learned the names of hundreds of creatures and became hawk-eyed beachcombers, collecting irridescent pen shells and yellow coral branches and moon snails as big as my fist and skate purses and chains of coins that spilled tiny knobbed whelks at every shake. Grandmother knew the names and stories of every creature whose abandoned shells filled our pails. At low tide we squished through the muddy silt, and at high tide we rode the waves on inflatable rafts until we were dragged home for dinner. An alligator patrolled the drainage ditch along Beachview Drive, and wildlife were so plentiful that they came every night to Grandmother's patio to feed - we watched, motionless, through the sliding glass doors as deer, raccoons, and possum gathered. My grandfather took us crabbing off the old lift bridge, and we bought shrimp right off the boats at the small dock in the old village. It was a magical adventure.
Over the years, my family has spent nearly every Easter vacation on this incredible island. The four children became six, who grew and married and returned with their own children and grandchildren. This past year, we celebrated with four generations (filling three cottages, a campsite, and a hotel suite) who love this island as much as my grandparents, Carl and Cecily Masters, did. I can't imagine a more perfect legacy.
Sincerely,
Nancy

Jeff's Memories

Here are three pictures out of many that my family and I have of Jekyll Island. I am now 39 years old and have been coming to Jekyll since I was in diapers. I remember when my uncle was stationed at the Glynco base and he and my aunt lived on Jekyll. We would come down almost every weekend. The first picture is of Beachview Drive just before the North picnic area date unknow. The second picture, is the entrance around 1980. The third is a picture of my father myself and a family friend parked at the north picnic area. I now collect Jekyll postcards and have over 200. Many of them from the 40's to the 70's. The only tangibility we can still savor are the old Polaroid’s and various scattered souvenirs which held a bookmarked place in our memories. Truly no words can eloquently convey the enchantment Jekyll holds over all who visit her, but hopefully our experience in words and pictures will illustrate the island’s dire need to be preserved and respected as a state park and historic archive.

My brother and I never realized that over time, we would greatly anticipate the smell of paper mills in July, as this was our cue to cease with the age old question of childhood travel: “are we there yet?” Once on the main road in we would look forward to the sound of our wheels traveling over the grill of the old drawbridge – the low moan our signal we had finally arrived. The slow drive in was so relaxing, with cicadas chanting our welcome, along with a thickness of air that was like a secure warm blanket around our skin. The palm trees would stand so tall, but there were always those few that would kneel down to greet the oncoming scattering of bikes and pedestrians along the sand-covered boardwalks.

Our souls were “home,” but it was not because of our hotel’s amenities, but rather the comforting ambience of Jekyll herself. The wonderful “skin” of Jekyll Island was a constant lesson for us in youth. Whether we were trying our hands at construction for that perfectly sturdy sandcastle, learning to stay afloat on her tranquil seas, or simply looking for patterns in her ever-changing landscape; my brother and I were constantly entertained and curious. In fact, driftwood beach still eludes and enchants me to this day.

We have traveled to Jekyll Island during many phases of our lives and will continue to do so, always assuming the same level of reverence and respect. I never forget to look to the old historic cottages by the Jekyll Island Club Hotel as a constant reminder of why people traveled to Jekyll – as an escape from the mundane. I think much the same, and hope that others will feel these words enough to realize that Jekyll Island’s beauty should be preserved as an escape from those things that keep us depressed, greedy, and uninspired. See more of the Sheehan's Jekyll pictures here or in this month's issue of Beachscape!

The promise to nature and Conservation

I am waiting (not to patiently), but I am, for the Turtle Center, I have already sent in a volunteer form!!! See you at the center!!!

Denise Tabor
Conyers, Ga

Pictures from a Reader

Molly Wms. says we can see her pictures posted on Flickr.com.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mmwm/sets/72157594414181404

When asked in the last 10 years what has changed for the best on Jekyll Island, we got the following responses:

1.
the historic district is wonderful
2.
The bike paths, paved roads in the Millionaires' Village.
3.
Landscaping on causeway. Street signage.
4.
The hotels are good.
5.
The best thing about Jekyll Island is that there is very little change. I love the fact that only one-third of the island can be developed.
6.
How well the historical side of the island is being preserved and yet still remaining accessible to everyone.
7.
Almost everything has changed for the better, including overall neatness and appearance of the island, improvement of historic area and the restaurant at the Grand Hotel as well as Latitude. Increase in number of bike trails. There also seems to be a much more acute awareness of the role the environment plays in the importance of Jekyll.
8.
Easier navigation at the pier and the historic district. Paved roads.
9.
The Campground and it's management/ staff are superb!!
10.
quality of accomodations
11.
Jekyll has done a good job "beautifying" the island with signage, foilage and upkeep of buildings. The historical district has been very well kept and renovated.
12.
the playground next to putt-putt was a great addition
13.
historic district improvements, expand/improving bike trails, some hotels 'cleaning-up'
14.
careful restoration of some buildings, the summer theatre group coming back... the bridges
15.
New bike paths
16.
Historical District
17.
historical area
18.
I like all of the improvements made to the island-i.e. improved bike trail, better rest room facilities. It is good to see that the progess is ongoing.
19.
bike trails, signs, some improvements in campground such as wireless internet
20.
It's still the beautiful quiet place it was the first time we went there.
21.
We like the special discounts given us at the campground for winter guests and the great treatment we receive.
22.
The campgound is cleaner. Bicycle paths are being repaired.
23.
Improved bike trail
24.
Keeping the island the way it is
25.
When I first came as a little girl the Jekyll Island Club was in horrible shape. Now it is beautiful. My husband and I married there 6 years ago. I wish the rest of the island looked more like that area in terms of landscaping and building quality.
26.
jekyll island club restaurants
27.
The Historical District changes are nice.
28.
The walkways to the beach. The continued commitment to nature - gentle reminders about the live sand dollars and deer crossings. The general upkeep and cleanliness of the island.
29.
more options for small children
30.
There have been continuing restorations to the Historic District and repairs and extension to the bike path.
31.
Renavating the Jekyll Island Club
32.
The island seems less crowded.
33.
Nothing
34.
Cleanliness of the beach and landscape
35.
continual improvement to landscaping, appearance
36.
The island hasn't changed regarding big business and development. That is what we like the most. The strip mall is old but one of the things we love the most about Jekyll. A portion of Beachview has been resurfaced. The bike trails are wonderful.
37.
Golf and the historic district.
38.
The Historic District restoration! The Beach cross-overs. The renovation of the Bike/walking path. Street sign and general signage is much better!
39.
The updated walks and homes in the historic district.
40.
It can't get much better!
41.
Maintenance of the trails is becoming more of a priority.
42.
The bike trails have improved. The new fishing pier and picnic grounds are lovely. We enjoyed eating at Crane cottage and the JI Club bistro/ deli always has wonderful food at decent prices for byciclists who stop by.
43.
Signage is better. Beach Crossovers are nice. Flowers are always wonderful
44.
Bike trails, landscaping (particularly at the entrance on the causeway), people fixing up their homes, Clam Creek improvements, forward thinking and planning by the JIA.
45.
SOME SPACE BEING USED REMODELING OF MOTELS ON ISLAND.
46.
Crossovers to the beach, but not enough of them
47.
Improved access to beach via well maintained steps over dunes; maintanence of roads is improving.
48.
Pine lakes golf and the bike paths
49.
Bike paths.
50.
awareness by some of the bad consequences of more development
51.
golf course improvements. Villas by the sea condos are nicer. more redfish. bikepaths are improved. road improvements.
52.
histotric district esp dining at Crane Cottage
53.
cleanliness everywhere, friendliness of people
54.
The Historic District is now offering wonderful new exhibits and a new restaurant at one of the cottages. Hurray for the Turtle Center. Hopefully it will educate the public and expand on the urgent need to protect these wonderful creatures.
55.
The 65%/35% law
56.
improved bike trails and historic district
57.
Historic Village restoration, bike paths, golf courses, roads
58.
condition of the historic district
59.
a good playground near Mini-golf for children and families. Wedding packages for Brides/Grooms offered by Motels and Club Hotel.
60.
Some of the hotels have updated, but not enough of them.
61.
circulation plan improvements in historic district
62.
the historic district
63.
The restoration of the historic district is wonderful, and the bike paths are improving. The upgrading of equipment at the Fire Department offers better protection for everyone. We're glad to see the "red bugs" at the airport and the terminal being used again. We love Tidelands and its programs.
64.
landscaping, signage,
65.
The appearance of the Historic District is beautiful. It is lovely and very informative for guests to be able to walk around. Also the Jekyll Is. Club has provided a number of eating places of various price levels in the area.
66.
upgrading of the historic district
67.
Bike paths, attitude of Pro Shop personnell, Morgan's Grill, Historic District
68.
Expanding bicycle paths.
69.
The natural areas(woods, beach's) have remained for all to enjoy. New bycicle/walking paths are wonderful.
70.
Improvements in other hotels and at Villas by the Sea. The improvements in the bike paths are much appreciated.
71.
Improvements in the Historic District and the Clam Creek Area, the new brochures being handed out to visitors, preservation of the Horton House, building more bike paths, and building safer dune crossings.
72.
Improvements to the biking trails, the sea turtle project, improvlments to the historic district
73.
Campground upgrades
74.
historic district, Clam Creek facilities
75.
Improvements in the Historic District and the Clam Creek Area, the new brochures being handed out to visitors, preservation of the Horton House, building more bike paths, and building safer dune crossings.
76.
Street signs and planting of more flowers and trees, as well as the bicycle paths.
77.
I would visit again
78.
It looked beautiful to me. May be the hotels are better. but make sure you keep the activities low key.
79.
Crossovers to the beach
80.
good roads, improvement of "cottages"
81.
Tabby drives around the historic district.
82.
Emphasis on turtle safety- new turtle center to open 2007
83.
Still remains low key for relaxing and improvements to Island itself
84.
fishing pier
85.
improvement on bike trails
86.
Christmas Decorations & July 4 fireworks
87.
nothing island (natural area) always well maintained
88.
repave roads - westside bike trails
89.
has not been over-developed
90.
more fun
91.
improved bike trails
92.
none
93.
No parking meters! We don't like Tybee for that reason
94.
historical sites still preserved, nature is still respected and cared for
95.
the new bridge
96.
Inproved bike paths
97.
golf conditions
98.
beaches were cleaner
99.
more bike trails
100.
bike paths
101.
toll not increasing
102.
I appreciate it more each time
103.
about the same
104.
Bike paths improved, historic district improved
105.
Maintenance has greatly improved
106.
Repaving of bike paths
107.
The convention center seems like a good attraction
108.
The Rah Bar is picking up - Kevin is good
109.
Nicer people that work here!
110.
More beach accesses, soccer fields
111.
beach seems cleaner, sand whiter
112.
Nothing
113.
Better Stewardship
114.
More bike trails, summerwaves, more picnic tables and beach access
115.
It is very clean with very little trafic.
116.
I think the one beach shop is new since my last trip in 2003.
117.
Public/private partnership to revitalize the historic district.
118.
I enjoy the natural eco-system. I like the preservation of the natural surroundings. We discover something new with every visit. Don't change the natural look of the island.
119.
Everything, Everytime we go there is always something new
120.
increased awareness of historic areas
121.
knowing we can return and it is preserved.
122.
lodging choices
123.
The lack of change in size of delevopement.
124.
some hotel upgrades
125.
Campground staff
126.
Bike path, fishing pier and St Andrews facilities
127.
Campground improvements overall island improvements.
128.
Modernizing certain public areas
129.
Getting on to the island
130.
new bridge
131.
very little
132.
Renovation of old building
133.
Accomodations, beaches
134.
The historic district
135.
More restaurants, partcularly in the millionaires village area. Restoration of the Jekyll Island Club Hotel and other buildings. New bridge to the island. Remodled Motels.
170.
I like that it doesnt appear to change all that much from visit to visit (only minor )
171.
There is more info available regarding the island's history.
172.
A lot has stayed small and unchanged
173.
I did like the water park but now I understand it is not going to open at full operation?? The bike paths are wonderfull, and the re-worked pier is nice also. None of this will amount to much if people do not have more nice accomadations to stay while here on the island
174.
nothing
175.
The upgrade of the historic area, the signage, and beach improvements.
176.
We are really looking forward to the opening of the Sea Turtle Center ! ! ! It's great that Georgia will be able to take care of it's "special visitors" ! The hiking & bike trail are very nice & we really enjoy coming here to relax and get away from the crowded beaches.
177.
It seems to be a little classier than in years past.
178.
historic area
179.
new paving, walkways, etc.
180.
THE HOTEL AND RESTURANTS ARE NOW SEVING BREAKFAST, THE BIKE PATHS ARE GETTING SOME WORK. THE PROJECT TO BUILD THE TURTLE HOSPITAL.
181.
renovations in "key" hotel chains - hotel appearances have improved
182.
Better restaurants
183.
bike paths
184.
Improvements to the island.
185.
Everything else has stayed relaxed
186.
hotel renovations definitely NEEDED to be done!
187.
Improved bike trails
188.
The restoration of old buildings
189.
nothing much has changed, but, that's why we like it and recomend it to everyone
190.
tours
191.
Changes at the historic sites 3 month memberships for golf Bike path improvements and extension It is a wonderful island for vacation/retirement etc.
192.
Nothing.
193.
It hasn't changed much and I'm glad! Also, I appreciate the signs pardoning the progress on the Huddle House and Georgia Coast Inn.
194.
Nothing much has changed.
195.
I love the new bridge and landscaping.
196.
did not observe any noticeable changes.
197.
1. island access. it is great not to have to wait on the bridge!! 2. the historic district seems to be improving. i have seen it go up and down through the years.
198.
Everything else pretty much remains the same
199.
Less people.
200.
the beautiful grounds, flowers, and food
201.
The playground at the mini golf course.
202.
It has stayed the same, predictable, steady, and more or less child-free during the winter months.
203.
Keeping the minimal development in control.
204.
Horses & more Police presence.
205.
the nicer bridge
206.
Everything seemed about the same
207.
More things to do.
208.
We noticed new rebovation (it's GREAT about the sea turtle hospital) and the bike path has been upgraded too.
209.
I feel that as long as it pretty much stays the way it is, I will want to continue to come back
210.
The hotels seem to be nicer
211.
Steps to the beach. Besides the items in question #19, it is always wonderful!
212.
more activities
213.
prices have come down
214.
The activities I have participated in such as biking, shopping in the Historic District, horseback riding on the beach etc.
215.
There always seems to be great preservation efforts, historically and naturally.
216.
Just love the peace and quiet. No big amusement parks, noise of boom boxes, crowds of people. A wonderful place to relax and get away from it all.
217.
The shopping area by the Jekyll Island Club.
218.
Always great time!
219.
overall look of island, glassball hunt is great!!!
220.
it seems he same
221.
The food - a couple of nice restaurants on the island and close by are one highlight to our trips.
222.
Relaxing atmosphere and friendliness also the grounds are kept beautiful.
223.
Restaurants, including the ones in the hotels.
224.
Addition of Summer Waves Water Park, (good place to spend one or two of the days there)
225.
islands easy radio, excellent care of facilities
226.
its only gotten more beautiful.
227.
hotels upgrading their space.........bike trails improvements
228.
nothing it's wonderful
229.
It remains one of our favorite places to visit.
230.
we can see the island looks cleaner and let's face it ...ya'll are the best...n' most of the time service employees/island folk are truly kind...
231.
Entry to Island, beach maintenance, food quality at Blackbeards, outstanding service at this establishment.
232.
bike trails are being repaired and added to.
233.
privateness
234.
Hotel updated
235.
doggie bags . Deck work all over the Island. Some of the Restuarants.Love all the work done at Club Hotel area.
236.
restaurants
237.
Bike paths
238.
nature walks, turtle building
239.
Historic area definitely improved.
240.
still a great place for golf and bike riding
241.
We like it just the way it is. We have come for years. Bicycling, enjoying the beach, Putt Putt golf, the nature center. We love it all. The best thing is the island is quiet, not busy or touristy. A wonderful quiet oasis to relax. We love the fact that the island is DOG FRIENDLY and enjoy bringing ours as well as seeing others. We recommend it highly to family and friends and will never tire of it. We like the fact that the hotels are renovated and not more added and added to make busier. If we wanted that we would go to St. Simons.
242.
It's still as beautiful as ever and it's not crowded!
243.
n/a
244.
Still a clean place to visit, friendly local merchants
245.
Stays quiet and peacefull--Thank you! When it gets crowed or commercial we will not return!
246.
The ongoing restoration of the cottages and the new turtle facility.
247.
The beachfront has improved greatly over the last ten years/
248.
its stayed a slow paced and uncrowded
249.
More activities for families.
250.
work on bike trails

251.
better bike/walking paths improvement of millionaires cottages
252.
Grounds are pretty
253.
it cannot get any better
254.
Improvements in the historical area.
255.
Historical district is a great place to bike & hang out - bike trailes continue to improve
256.
There are a few more restaurants to choose from when eating out. We also like the ferry.
257.
Villas by the Sea and staff
258.
better landscaping
259.
historic village
260.
bike path
261.
EVERYTHING IS WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
262.
same as above
263.
Website and booking online ability. Also, the fact that the Resort appears to have not changed - with the exception of laudable continued rehabilitation/restoration efforts - is a huge plus.
264.
I think that the remodeling of the older hotels is for the better.
265.
There are nicer and more affordable places to stay. And nothing changes from year to year, basically. We know just what to expect and that's why we keep coming. Summer Waves wasn't there when we started coming and the JI CLub was a run-down hotel with only one lonely person sitting around a dirty pool.
266.
the water park was a great inprovement needs to be larger needs mor shopping stores
267.
upgrading children activities ie playgrounds, bicycles, bike paths
268.
HARD TO SPECIFY, FOOD GOOD at the Club, golf excellent,
269.
low key, not many hotels
270.
Not much in my opinion. I feel like a lot of the island does need improvement.
271.
limited choices of restaurants
272.
More places to eat
273.
so much is the same
274.
The taking over of one of the smaller hotels by Quality Inn and the rehab work done on the hotel that is now The Beachview Club. These provide nice options (and reasonable rates) for those wishing to be on or near the beach.
275.
a few more places to eat
276.
more bike trails
277.
New pavement and bike trails
278.
familar with area
279.
New signs at the entrance of the island. The beauitful bridge has been finished.
280.
Bike trail has been improved; campground has been improved. The Historic area has been greatly improved. The best thing is that these improvements have been made without changing the laid back atmosphere of the island.
281.
no idea
282.
Facilities installed by JIA
283.
Bicycle paths...the campground is the best anywhere!!! Better hang on to the manager there, in 10 years of camping there he has improved it tremendously. This year we want to find reasonable, cottage winter rental BUT I must say the rental agents don't make it easy. The island showed many improvements this past winter and we noticed and appreciated them.
284.
The general appearance of the entire island just keeps getting more beautiful
285.
THE MANAGEMENT OF THE CAMPGROUND
286.
none
287.
none
288.
accomodations improving
289.
The maintainence of the bike trails and the foresight to appoint the present campground manager. Ronnie has been a terrific asset!
290.
2nd place finish for my daughter krystal quihuis
291.
the refurbishing of bike trails
292.
new playground
293.
roads
294.
roads and access to river
295.
Bike trails, recently discovered the "Raw Bar" a few years ago,
296.
We enjoy the water slides because the children are afraid of sharks in the ocean!
297.
bike paths are very nice
298.
The island still seems the same to me, quiet and very laid back.
299.
Golf
300.
still not overly commercialized
301.
Improved walking paths and roads in the historic district; improved exhibits and interpretive signage through district, museum, and cottages; upgrade, expansion and maintenance of bike paths, bath houses, and beach crossovers; capitol improvements of a few beach side hotels, the playground, the new bike storage building; the expanded and retooled historic district tour program. I just think the entire historic district is 10 times more appealing since the circulation plan has been phased in over the last 6-7 years.
302.
Nothing else needed changing
303.
The bridge is beautiful.
304.
increased activities at Goodyear for all
305.
renovation of some cottages as well as the club
306.
I like the idea of Jekyll being less touristy than the other islands. Not wall to wall people. You can enjoy yourself and not be crowded and not much noise. It is calm and peaceful.
307.
restoration of cottages, road improvements
308.
more activities
309.
more busnesses
310.
Only visited once.
311.
A few more restaurants to choose from.
312.
The all-over look
313.
Cleaner, brighter
314.
Entrance onto the Island is much improved. Grounds are more beautiful, flowers, etc. Golf courses are better, especially Pine Lakes.
315.
The best thing is it hasn't changed! Any change would not be an improvement.
316.
see 19
317.
Still clean and family oriented
318.
More activities, such as turtle walk, water park
319.
Restoration of many of the houses near the Jekyll Island Club.
320.
Bicycle paths
321.
the Turtles, we bought shirts and bricks for the turles in our grandchildrens name It it great that Jekyll cares so much about our wildlife. Birdwatching is so relaxing
322.
The turtle watching activities and program
323.
bike trails
324.
see above comment
325.
Newly paved bike trails. Jewelry show the weekend we arrive. Water Park is great for a day break from the ocean water. The kids love it.
326.
improvements to bicycle paths.
327.
the water park
328.
touristy things, like the tours, the 'find a treasure' contest a few years ago was a lot of fun, the water park is a favorite of the younger set. everything is always wonderful when we come
329.
MORE SHOPS OPEN
330.
Same as above.
331.
nothing that I am aware of
332.
The historic district looks more and more beautiful. Restored houses, new landscaping and circulation plan is great!
333.
more historic buildings open
334.
Improved bike trails and restrictions on the chain establishments.
335.
none
336.
The new bridge and playground.
337.
stayed the same everything
338.
The water park is pretty cool and we always have a hugh family putt-putt golf match.
339.
The island visitor center is beautiful.
340.
N/A 1 trip
341.
We enjoy the bike riding. The trails are well maintained
342.
The historic district has been fixed up and is wonderful to see.
343.
casino on the water, water activities for children, shopping,
344.
The historic distric it is fantastic what they have done and not taken away from atmosphere.
345.
Nothing. Restaurants with no liquor. Motels are still old and outdated.
346.
It is the same. Wonderful.
347.
Little, keep it as it is please. Including the well maintained environment.
348.
The continued renovation of the cottages is a real plus for the Island. I love the fact that more and more of the buildings are open to the public.
349.
Again, maintaining the pristine wildlife areas and beaches.
350.
Maintain the historical distric and keep the beaches as is...Continue monitoring for beach erosion...
351.
I loved the playground that was put in
352.
Access to Hollybourne :-)
353.
We see change and updates and renovations every time we come. Generally, they have all been for the better.
354.
my husband noted the restrooms at the fishing pier were a great improvement and walkways in the historic district are nice the island looks great!!
355.
no change noticed
356.
more beautiful
357.
n/a
358.
I think the reason we keep coming back is the fact that it hasn't changed much at all.
359.
Restoration of the historic distric
360.
still plenty of relaxing space to go around
361.
The new walk ways were nice.
362.
It's all wonderful!
363.
about the same
364.
We loved our first trip. Will be back to stay longer as we were only able to get accomodations for 2 days.
365.
marina is still in good shape..could be expanded to allow more boats space for dockage
366.
Golf courses have been updated.
367.
landscaping/general improvements at fishing pier/ bicycle paths
368.
n/a
369.
The Jekyll Island Club Hotel is still elegant and the choice of places to eat has improved.
370.
same thing - not terribly far from atlanta
371.
The glass balls are beautiful and fun to look for.
372.
Where we have stayed at Villas By the Sea and previously at the Beachview Club have been nice and seemed to have improved over the last few years. Bike trails are better, too.
373.
It has always been a place to come and relax and eat good food and enjoy a beach and island that has not become too commercial.
374.
More modern motels.
375.
The Jekyll Island Club and the Historic area - which has remained gorgeous - continues to make improvements.
376.
I went to driftwood beach for the first time during my most recent visit and thought that it was great!!! I just loved driftwood beach!!! My dad and I also went to Summer Waves Water Park on the island and found it clean, efficiently run, and not too crowded. Thumbs up!!! One other thing we liked was visiting the 4-H center. There we saw Dylan the sea turtle. I sure hope he has gotten his strength back and has been released. He really captured our hearts!!!
377.
More Events on the Island,
378.
The Seafarer has upgraded their accomadations to make our stay more comfortable.
379.
new bicycle paths and walking paths-GREAT JOB- keep them up.
380.
cottages are more comfortable for multi family stays
381.
Improved golf courses
382.
Hotel rooms have improved.
383.
The renovation of the buildings in the historic district. New paving and parking lots, ie Goodyear. The turtle project. Wireless communications are much improved. Many activities: Goodyear Art Programs, Festival, Exhibits; February Bird Count; Presbyterian Church lectures (excellent this year); Tidelands programs; music programs; Christmas events these are just a few of the quality events taking place on the Island that make our stay one we look forward to each year.
384.
It hasn't become overdeveloped as other places have (such as Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach, even Amelia Island).
385.
more hotels and shopping
386.
turtle protection
387.
Nice Beach facility
388.
The Turtle Center which is planned
389.
Since I have been visiting, the tours and the upkeep of the older homes has gotten alot better, the island is clean and well kept. The groundkeeping is better. Roads are good with good campground and pier access.
390.
most everything especially the fishing at the old bridge. Also, the campground is a lot cleaner than the previous time.
391.
Everything is always good when I come to Jekyll.
392.
don't know
393.
the completed construction in the historic district
394.
GOLF
395.
THE PARKING AT THE PIER AND THE NEW BATHROOMS
396.
none
397.
entrance is beautiful and the island stays the same, it truly is a jewell re newed walking and bicycle trails
398.
Love the kids playground
399.
more activites
400.
The island has basically stayed the same, since I was a young girl. I love that! I am thrilled that Jekyll Island has not become commercialized.
401.
bike paths, plantings, some (but not all) historical reclamation.
402.
Up keep of the island
403.
Improvements to bike trails and roads
404.
Improved golf courses
405.
Bicycle paths, Jekyllisland Millionaires village and hotel. Many of the homes have beenupdated
406.
None
407.
Up-dating of Historic District.
408.
No more development has occured.
409.
I love the fact that there seems to be more and more involvement in the saving of the Sea Turtles every year.
410.
nicer looking
411.
friendly people and more deer.
412.
seems to get more beautiful
413.
?????
414.
The signage in the historic district.
415.
things have remained pleasant
416.
Cleanliness of the island as a whole looks great
417.
The renovations in the historical district have pleased me more than anything. I am glad more of the homes are being restored.
418.
Same as 19
419.
Still very much the same as I had remembered it from previous visits. That's one reason I want to return this September.
420.
There are more options for places to eat.
421.
The water park, Antique stores,
422.
the food
423.
Protection of the beaches has improved.
424.
??
425.
None
426.
Still great golf
427.
The JIA has been doing wonderful work on the sites, bikepaths, signs etc
428.
bike rental choices
429.
Seems to be more and better upkeep of the colorful flowers coming onto the island. Very pretty.
430.
Our particular rental has gone up in price but has a wonderful pool & hot tub that we enjoy!
431.
Not applicable, see response to # 19.
432.
turtle walks
433.
The additional bike trail and the closure of the roads in the historic district.
434.
bike paths
435.
more visitors
436.
Still not commercialized
437.
The water park, dolphin tours, nature walks, & etc... are nice. I like that Jekyll is not as developed as other coastal destinations.
438.
The island's development does not change. JI remains the same laid back atmosphere year after year.
439.
The Island always looks the same, which is wonderful. No additional development.
440.
Crane and Cherokee Cottages have been renovated!!!!
441.
The lanscaping and improvements like the ones along the roadway to the fishing pier.
442.
same as always
443.
cleanliness
444.
clean up of the graveyard
445.
same answer as above. the atmosphere is very conducive to visiting
446.
Improvements in the historic district!! Better bike paths.
447.
I like the twin fountains at the entrance of the Jekyll Island causeway.
448.
nil
449.
The Jekyll Historic district restoration has really been wonderful.
450.
Addition to the bike trail and the sea turtle program being built up.
451.
Bike paths have improved (in certain places)
452.
Still relatively peaceful
453.
I am not aware of anything
454.
IT IS A CALM AND BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO STAY EITHER A WEEKEND OR TWO WEEKS. IT IS THE BEST PLACE I HAVE FOUND TO JUST GO AND RELAX. THE ISLAND IS VERY LAID BACK AND I LOVE THAT.
455.
I was pleased to see a few more hotel options. However, hopeful it won't become overgrown with them.
456.
upgraded bike trails
457.
cleaner
458.
continued improvements in the historic district
459.
Well, the fact that it hasn't changed and gotten overly developled is what I continue to like about Jekyll.
460.
Better restaurants.
461.
improvements to historic distrct/ shopping
462.
Can't think of anything at this time.
463.
Improved bike trails, picnic areas
464.
It's remained much the same, which is good, we think. We always enjoy its beauty and serenity, compared to many other destinations.
465.
More activities.
466.
See above
467.
still pretty
468.
Something new.
469.
Uncertain
470.
it has stayed the same.
471.
bridge ,entrance
472.
Gets more beautiful every trip.
473.
renovations of available hotels
474.
accomodations, the friendliness of the people
475.
Summer Waves water park
476.
causeway bridge and golf courses
477.
not broke keep it the same.
478.
all enjoyable
479.
Population has not grown much.
480.
With the development restrictions, there has not been a lot of changes which is great...We really have not noticed too many changes in the 10 years coming there which is also great---very little traffic and commercialization...
481.
keeping the quiet
482.
It has stayed a small place
483.
The remodeling of the cottages. Remodeling of the hotels.
484.
improvments to wharf area
485.
sorry- I have only been the once-- ask me again in June, after I get back from this trip
486.
Improved bike paths Improved beachscapes
487.
Improvement in places to dine.
488.
Golf course improvements
489.
it looks about the same
490.
I remember as a teenager that my memory of Jekyll Island was that it smelled very badly. All these years later I was pleasantly surprised to see what an extraordinary thriving habitat was there (and it didn't smell like it used to). Also, I was thrilled at the preservation of the historic buildings and the effort by the Jekyll Island Auth to promote Historic Preservation.
491.
Continually good streets and sidewalks.
492.
More private residences to choose from to rent...hotels are too high.
493.
Hotel upgrades
494.
The historic district has changed for the better. The bridge bringing you onto the island is great. I don't miss the draw bridge.
495.
The water park is great fun for the kids.
496.
loved the beaches
497.
Everything is pretty much the same, which is a good thing
498.
Bike path, access to natural areas.
499.
EVERYTHING
500.
Historic district renovations!

501.
NOTHING! You can't improve on perfection and Jekyll Island is perfect. That is why I bring my wife, five children, their spouces, and my nine grandchildren back at least once each year.
502.
NA
503.
very,very, relaxing
504.
Linited renovations
505.
Clean, clean, clean
506.
It is still a quiet place to enjoy time with your family.
507.
same as above
508.
Not selling out to corporate hotels, resorts, condos, food chains, etc.
509.
Nothing
510.
?
511.
Love what you are doing to protect the turtles and other wildlife
512.
Hotels are repaired
513.
The historic area still looked nice
514.
???
515.
FIREWORKS
516.
nothing
517.
na
518.
Tourism advantages
519.
It's been almost ten years since I last visited before my recent visit to the island a little over a month ago. Couldn't really tell because I was a teenager then.
520.
The sprucing up is nice.
521.
more singing groups at night, for sitting on the beach/pool to be entertained
522.
more to do
523.
Bike paths better, Motel ( Quality Inn) is much better in past few years than in previous years. We have been coming here for 10 or 12 years.
524.
bike trails, whole island seem cleaner and more manicured
525.
it has remained natural to the environment and not a lot of commerical, business stuff on the island
526.
n/a
527.
The side walks and board walks
528.
The new turtle center is coming!!
529.
NA
530.
better overall value/hotel packages
531.
none
532.
More tours of island - protection of the endangered species
533.
flowers
534.
Holiday Inn was a very nice hotel. Also, the Sea Jay's was nice (minus some of the people) and so was our dolphin tour with Captin Reynolds.
535.
none
536.
Renovating the historic area. Really, really nice.
537.
It's maintained it's natural beauty, and the bike trails all around the island are great!
538.
more food options the public beach facilities historic district improvements
539.
It is still beautiful
540.
historic distoric
541.
The Millionaires Village continues to improve. Mnay of the private residences have been remodeled.
542.
Improved parking and bathroom facilites Improved landscaping throughout the island Improved bike paths
543.
Summer Waves is better. The Days Inn is much better.
544.
Improvements to the bike paths....improvements to the St. Andrew's Beach Area.....
545.
none
546.
NICE PLACE TO VISIT
547.
better restaurants
548.
don't know
549.
The Turtle Museum and activities about which we are very excited. Tearing down of Huddle House.
550.
Still love to come down for a peaceful vacation and am going to be planning a wedding there soon. The water park was a nice touch for the kids and the views are spectacular!
551.
more resturants nicer hotels
552.
More bike trails.
553.
Sometimes no change is good. Keep it as it is, with maybe more available rooms...
554.
more activities going on.
555.
The better part is that it hasn't changed much. You can still see the beach when you drive by, you can still bike around the island, there are no large strip malls or island junky stores to spoil the image of serenity. Love the area where the old hotel is. Beautiful. The restaurants are great too.
556.
the new side walks and bike paths.
557.
n/a
558.
Nicer facilities at the pier.
559.
I love that the Island continues to reinvest in itself.
560.
MORE PEOPLE
561.
Some new motels are being built. The pier is nice.
562.
more restaurants
563.
Huddle house closed, no building allowed, updated fishing pier area
564.
I cannot think of any changes.
565.
with more people comes more opportunities (restaurants, etc)
566.
see above
567.
See #19.
568.
More relaxed than even before, even all these months later. I can visualize being there and instantly relax.
569.
The park and picnic area by Driftwood Beach is a big improvement.
570.
I really can't see any thing
571.
Thats the thing about the Island really nothing changes much Thats what I like about it.
572.
preservation of old buildings, dunes...
573.
We've learned more about the opportunity of renting a house.
574.
nature walks
575.
More golf courses
576.
Golf courses are better
577.
The hotels seem to be nicer. A carriage ride around the whole island would be nice or a trolley to get from the beach hotels to the cottages/Club.
578.
Improved signage and landscaping.
579.
The scenery has always been great- and continues to get better! I have noticed that the island is moving towards more of a young family atmosphere- which is great!
580.
Some motels have up-graded. More needs to be done. Extension of bicycle paths. Better outdoor toilet facilities. The historical village & roads
581.
still quaint atmosphere
582.
Island facilities upgrades
583.
Love the biking trails
584.
The landscaping and upkeep of the islands and resorts seems to be improving.
585.
cleaner beaches
586.
The beauty of the island
587.
walkway by ocean in better condition
588.
We have always been satisfied and do not think you could improve it on this side of Heaven, which means the bugs no longer bite. The bug bites are worth the wonderful times we have there. We love Jekyll in any kind of weather also.
589.
improved the cottages and hotel
590.
landscaping is better, its cleaner
591.
Putt Putt Course, bike paths
592.
Historic district improvements, lanscaping and gardens throughout the island, bike paths, signage.
593.
n/a
594.
Summer Waves
595.
Nothing
596.
Better camping area, stores
597.
water park
598.
we love the place! i haven't seen much change.
599.
everything....love the island
600.
limit of commercial development
601.
I loved planting the sea oats and sea grass many years ago and it's so cool to walk by and see my babies. I'm all about keeping the natural beauty and lots of space for animals to live, so anything that helps the wildlife thrive, I'm for.
602.
Upgrading of bike paths, picnic areas, playground, golf courses, Christmas decorations lovely
603.
Cleaner
604.
Improvements in the historic district
605.
the improvement to the bike trails
606.
The Jekyll Island Club has been restored since our last visit--we enjoyed visiting and dining there. The bike trails seemed to be well maintained and enjoyed a day of biking. Beaches and steps seemed well cared for. The residential/rental properties seem to be better cared for than I recall from 20 years ago. Only used 9 hole golf course, but others looked very inviting and reasonably priced.
607.
The bike trail has been well maintained.
608.
me
609.
The bridge
610.
We've been told that they are trying to work on this by putting more sand towards the end of the beach.
611.
better bridge
612.
more activities, wish there were more shopping venues at an affordable price. Grocery stores and Gas Stations with better rates, one tends to make sure and fill up in Brunswick rather than on the island.
613.
The atmosphere is great. I enjoy that it seems to becomes less expensive to visit each time we visit.
614.
New bridge and convention center upgrades
615.
The beach experience gets better and better.
616.
The bath houses and pier picnic area are very nice good use of parking fee.
617.
The historic preservation work. It is wonderful too see these homes restored to thier original grandeur.
618.
historic district
619.
My own anticipation of arrival
620.
Jekyll still has its old charm and gives you a sense of relaxation as soon as you arrive on the Island. Its beautiful and I can't wait to be there in a week!
621.
New water park
622.
The anticipated addition of the turtle house.
623.
Everything has changed for the better
624.
Environmental touches; Glory Boardwalk; soccer; playground renovation; bike trails better.
625.
hotels are better managed and cared for
626.
more outside family activities
627.
The restoration in the historic district
628.
We come regularly for day trip since last july so maybe not enough long to see changes.
629.
Still beautiful and there is no construction going on like everywhere else.
630.
I have more time
631.
I feel safe to walk or bike around the island by myself.
632.
More shopping and resturants
633.
we keep up with what is going on during the year more
634.
Nothing
635.
n/a
636.
Millionaire's village - the hotel, shops, houses being renovated, the entire place is just wonderful.
637.
It has stayed the same and that is what I like about it! I always know what to expect when I come.
638.
natural areas
639.
The peaceful is the same!
640.
The beach entrances over the dunes have definitely improved.
641.
N/A
642.
Causeway
643.
Sandwiches at the Big Hotel Waterplay for the children
644.
Construction of new bridge; updating of some of the hotels.
645.
historic district renovation. golf facilities much nicer
646.
Renovations up near restaurants and Jekyll Island Village
647.
Only two trips, both day trips. Did not notice any significant changes.
648.
none
649.
Beach seems cleaner
650.
The new North pier park improvements(restrooms) and same for the other areas. Work toward healing the scars of overuse in some areas. New trails.
651.
Improved bike trails.
652.
The Jekyll Island Club Hotel
653.
The planned events in the millionaires village.
654.
everything but traffic
655.
New things to do and see.
656.
up dating facilities
657.
it was all great!!
658.
Historic area upgrades, Bicycle trail upgrades
659.
beaches are much cleaner
660.
The bike trails, the pier
661.
That it has stayed essentially the same while other places just continue to expand, become crowded and busy and commercial
662.
Hotels have been refurbished
663.
new & upgraded bike paths
664.
I love how the Island have fixed up the old millionaire's homes and grounds, the new bridge coming in and the scenery is beautiful.
665.
I have learned more about the area.
666.
It never seems to change which is what appeals to me. I am not interested in loud, gaudy, activities. Riding bikes, walking on the beach, enjoying nature and taking in the historic district is what appeals to me.
667.
Some improvement in upkeep of historic structures.
668.
Pine Lakes Golf Course
669.
Having additional activities to do for the family (ie deep sea fishing, charter boats, dolphin watches, etc.), but when you have more than two people it gets quite expensive to do any additional activities.
670.
Better restaurants on the island
671.
Constant upgrading of the historical area and also building the water park.
672.
same as #19
673.
That it hasn't changed much.
674.
N/A
675.
General groundskeeping much better. New public boating ramp is great. One thing that is not really "better", but the moratorium/limitation of building on the island is a very good thing.
676.
It hasn't been spoiled by commercialism.
677.
Since I have turned 21 we have enjoyed going to the bar that has open mike night and dancing.
678.
non
679.
I haven't noticed a difference for the better.
680.
Nothing has really changed. Still a perfect getaway
681.
We are not aware of any changes for the better, we are very satisfied with the Island the way it is.
